REA boss gives reasons why Nigeria’s rural electrification projects are delayed


Lack of reliable data and paucity of funds may scuttle the dream of getting supplying electricity to rural communities across the country, the Rural Electrification Nigeria Agency (REA Target) Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Damilola Ogunbiyi, has said.
She spoke during the week at the 2018 edition of the Nigeria Off-Grid Innovations and Summit in Lagos. She said Nigeria needed to provide adequate information on people living in rural and semi-urban areas, before it could effectively utilise the $200 million loan expected from African Development Bank (AfDB).
According to her, the bane of the power industry is poor funding and access to reliable data on the people who need electricity. Ogunbiyi said government should not think that power programmes or policies would materialise without the involvement of the private sector, noting that such has never worked in the past.

300 level ABU student commits suicide over ‘lack of parental love’

A   300 level student of the  Ahmadu Bello University , Zaria, ABU Aisha Omolola, has committed suicide in her apartment at Samaru area of Zaria. Aisha, TALKERlearned, drank a bottle of insecticide on December 26, 2018, leaving a note where she stated the reason for her action. In her suicide note, the deceased blamed her parents for her action, saying they made life a living hell for her. The suicide note read: “Just like I said, If I am no more, please hold my family especially my mum and dad responsible. I have tried to be the best I can be, stayed away from them just because they blamed me for their mistakes and they can’t love, help and take care of me like their own. “My mum has made life a living hell for me because she is bipolar and frustrated, accusing me of being a witch, and a cursed child even though my brother is responsible for my education and upkeep. “The only thing she helps me with is my feeding money. *FUTA alumni reject call to rename varsity after Shagari

Following the call to rename the Federal University of Technology, Akure, after the late former President Shehu Shagari, the alumni of the institution have kicked against the call, saying it might mar the brand of the institution.  It was gathered that after the death of Shagari, there had been calls from some quarters that the former President be immortalised by naming one of the federal universities  established during his administration between 1979 to 1983, after him.  Speaking with journalists on Wednesday, the President of the FUTA Alumni Association, Olaitan Adesomoju, appealed to the Federal Government to disregard the suggestion that Shagari be immortalised by renaming FUTA after him.  According to the  alumni president, a name change for FUTA would do more harm than good to the institution, which he said had over the years created an international brand for itself with the name FUTA.  Adesomoju said the focus for the institution should be how its infrastructural an
